For part 2 of the course, I will be producing a documentary. It will take the form of a film documentary, as film is my specialism. However, there some aspects that will have to be decided on before hand. Firstly, the documentary will require a subject matter for the film to focus on. Secondly, there are several types of documentary present in the film industry. The documentary will either have to fit into one of these categories or it can break the rules and exist as its own thing, being a combination of a few.
Poetic
Poetic documentaries are considered to be the most emotive form present. They usually ignore a stereotypical narrative structure and instead, highlight mood, tone and messages through montage like editing to create disjuncture and specific patterns of imagery. The goal of such a documentary is to persuade the audience into thinking a certain manner via emotion. Poetic can be considered more abstract than other types.
Expository documentaries
These documentaries contain a voice that is usually omniscient. The speaker will mainly give an objective observation and analysis of the subject shown on the film. The aim of using a speaker is too persuade the audience to instantly think a certain way about the visuals shown, which differs from the interpretive stance that poetic documentaries take.
Observational documentaries
Some film makers consider poetic and expository to be too niche of a documentary form, and so prefer to use light rig filming and sound equipment to produce instantaneous footage out and about. This method allows the film to become grounded in the everyday lives of the public and therefore more of a believable source of information for the audience.
Reflexive documentaries
These refer to when a documentary is self referential and comments on the making of the documentary itself. The film makers will go into technicalities such as editing, camera work or behind the storytelling, in order to demystify the illusion of film.
