Moving image rotation: evaluation
What went
successfully?
- · The concept for anxiety remained constant throughout the rotation. Early ideas consisted of using cinematography and editing as tools to distressing imagery, whilst accompanied by appropriate music.
- · The pace of the editing complemented the rhythm of music, which was made successful by cutting clips to match the constantly changing pace of the music. This example of amplification is commonly used in music videos, as the audio intensifies the meaning of the visuals.
- · As well as fast paced cutting that amplified the visuals, some clips featured dilated time duration through the speed duration tool on premiere pro. By using both normal speed clips and increase speed clips, the resulting effect leaves viewer with a feeling of this dissonance, due to an irregular rhythm in both the audio and now the visuals.
What went
unsuccessfully?
- · The film contains very little narrative as it stands. It took more of an abstract approach to the emotion anxiety through surreal, anxiety invoking imagery of the subjects distressing movements. If more time was focused on the ideas segment of the design cycle, the film would have contained a more substantial narrative.
- It was decided early on that the project would not be a collaboration, as this would allow for full creative freedom in filming and editing. The drawback to this would be that I would have to film and edit everything on my own, which proved to be time consuming, especially in the editing process. Luckily, I had past experience in these processes in the past.
How will
this rotation impact your future work?
- · Through the synopsis of the scene from ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’, I discovered that a narrative can be conveyed through visual communication alone and can often be more impactful than using dialogue. Future moving images may use very little dialogue and focus on only visuals to connote tone.
- Future projects that involve film making, will allow for extended time in production and post production, as time was the main constraint in this rotation.
