The game 'Cuphead', made by Studio MDHR, has been my primary source of inspiration not just for this project but for my cartoons outside of the foundation course.

The game simulates The 'Rubber Hose' art style that was prominent in the 1930's. It took the company 5 years to complete production, due to the method of animation of 2D pencil to paper, as this would allow the animation to appear more authentic to that of its inspired style.

The plot of the game revolves around 2 characters that resemble anthropomorphised cups, battling bosses, in order to exchange their souls to the devil in return for theirs.

It contains somewhat mature themes of death and satanism. Ironically, these themes are underlying tones in animations done by Disney, such 'Silly Symphonies - The Skeleton Dance' By Walt Disney Animation Studios. It injects a twisted perspective that coincides with the audience's nostalgia for these types of cartoons. Therefore, as the audience grow from children to adults, so to does the themes of these cartoons mature.

The Characters in 'Cuphead' feature the use of redundant conventions of 'Rubber Hose' such as the 'Pac man' like eyes, the limbs that take on the appearence and movement of a hose and a shiny texture that donnotes the rubber like quality of the characters.

The game, however is unique in the way in which the characters are created. MDHR Studios mash objects and things together that would not have any connection in any other context.

In the Image above. It show the the characters 'Cuphead' and 'Mugman'. Using an inanimate object such as a cup and personifying it is an example how how the studio blend things together without any reason.

For my project, the aspects of the art style and the mature themes surrounding death will be used. More research will need to be done, as to not follow this inspiration too closely. and an alternative animations style may be required to save time.
